Dear Venomland Members and Friends, Venomland is a little more than 6 years old now and by far the biggest Hot Snake community on the Planet! We want to thank all of you who made Venomland the leading Board. We are also very thankful to our Moderators and Admins for years of hard work. Now, it is time to move on. I have been thinking how to proceed and what to do with our beloved board as we reach a size, that we need to make drastic changes to secure the future of our community. As of now, Venomland is hosted by a free (well mostly free) hosting service. That was good for the first years but now we need to find a new way to run our forum. I have spend hundreds of Dollars over the years to keep Venomland up and running, and i have done so with pleasure. Now, we need your help! We need to come up with several thousand dollars for our Venomland 2.0 project, which i frankly cant pay for any longer by myself. So Venomland is asking his Friends and Members for the first time for their financial Support. Please help to keep Venomland alive, and let us move on to a new, better Portal in the Future! Every Dollar is helping us a great deal. I know, its hard times for everyone, but please spare a few Dollar for our community. If you have only 10 Dollars to spare, we are grateful, if it is more, it would be awesome. We are planning to develop a very new Venomland, with real community functions, a forum like you are already loving it and a real (online) Hot Snake Magazin. Also, there will be download areas for scientific papers, Wallpapers and more. Again folks, we can only do that if you all help. Please send me a Private Message if you want to keep Venomland alive, i will provide you with the details on how to donate Money. For now, we can accept money from creditcards via skrill (please google it, its a free service - account-details will be forwarded to you) and paypal. All the best, and for a (hopefully) nice future of our Board. Mario

Excellent paper Peter, thanks for posting. I would be interested to learn of any other conservation projects in this area, including other Vipera and Montivipera species. Many of these have very restricted distribution areas, and , as a result, are very rare. It would be great to be involved in a captive breeding programme for some of these rare Vipers.
Cheers,
Brian.

This is a good conservation project. It's sad to see it's not the same everywhere.
I've looked for Vipera Ursinii's conservation project and i have to say not a lot of things were done for them unlike this project for Vipera Darevskii

@ Simon - look at the link from Peter. You can find the Action Plan for conservating the meadow Viper. Ok, it´s from 2006, but they start a Program. For other species we don´t have such! (Still killing M.l.lebetina on Cyprus. Destroing habitats of M.schweizeri on Milos...) both Countrys are in the EU! But, this is an other story.
I know that Prof. Baron from France is working in the area in south France within the V. ursinii Populations.
I know a man from Germany they was there and have meet him there. The found together some usrinii´s there. Make pictures and collect datas from each individual they can find.
I think the most danger will become with the ,,winter sports´´ in the mountain biotops there.
But have a look to Olympic winter games the will come now. The are located in Sotchy, there are a big population of Caucasian Vipers! Maby after this, we have a lost of hunderets or thousends of kaznakovi´s... Very bad! Years ago, some people start a petition against the wintergames, but nothing helps...
Since one year I´ve never hear something about this. Maby someone has news of this case?

But this is all out of the topic....;-)

Hello Everyone! I personally know Levon and his V. darevskii project is amazing. I was fortunate enough to hear him give a talk on it just a couple of weeks ago.

Also, I work at the Saint Louis Zoo and one of our conservation projects is talked about above. Here is another link to some older info: http://www.stlzoo.org/wildcareinstitute/mountainvipersinarmenia/

Matt, you do some excellent conservation work at Saint Louis Zoo, well done. What work are you currently doing with Montivipera?
Cheers,
Brian.

Brian, Thanks for the kind words! All of our projects are done by our curator of herps, Jeff Ettling. I have just been fortunate enough to tag along on 2 of his trips. He is still working with M. raddei. The colleagues/friends that have been made in Armenia through this project lead me to believe that we will always work there, whether with Montivipera, Macrovipera, or Vipera. There will be publications from this project in the near future. We also do a lot of captive reproduction with Montivipera and Vipera at the Zoo.

Hi Matt, thanks for the reply . It would be good to read the publications when they come out. I hope to start captive breeding with my Montivipera next year. Keep up the good work.
Cheers,
Brian.
