Dear Venomland Members and Friends, Venomland is a little more than 6 years old now and by far the biggest Hot Snake community on the Planet! We want to thank all of you who made Venomland the leading Board. We are also very thankful to our Moderators and Admins for years of hard work. Now, it is time to move on. I have been thinking how to proceed and what to do with our beloved board as we reach a size, that we need to make drastic changes to secure the future of our community. As of now, Venomland is hosted by a free (well mostly free) hosting service. That was good for the first years but now we need to find a new way to run our forum. I have spend hundreds of Dollars over the years to keep Venomland up and running, and i have done so with pleasure. Now, we need your help! We need to come up with several thousand dollars for our Venomland 2.0 project, which i frankly cant pay for any longer by myself. So Venomland is asking his Friends and Members for the first time for their financial Support. Please help to keep Venomland alive, and let us move on to a new, better Portal in the Future! Every Dollar is helping us a great deal. I know, its hard times for everyone, but please spare a few Dollar for our community. If you have only 10 Dollars to spare, we are grateful, if it is more, it would be awesome. We are planning to develop a very new Venomland, with real community functions, a forum like you are already loving it and a real (online) Hot Snake Magazin. Also, there will be download areas for scientific papers, Wallpapers and more. Again folks, we can only do that if you all help. Please send me a Private Message if you want to keep Venomland alive, i will provide you with the details on how to donate Money. For now, we can accept money from creditcards via skrill (please google it, its a free service - account-details will be forwarded to you) and paypal. All the best, and for a (hopefully) nice future of our Board. Mario

Hello everyone,

In the website of balcanica.info I have seen some Ammodytes from the location of Krasno, Croaty with very white coloration and very strong dark dorsals.
Does anyone work with this locality?

I'm very curius to see some of them.

Here is a link that you can see what I mean Very Happy

Those are some of nicest ammodytes I've ever seen. Very nice sharp drawings..

I've never seen ammodytes like these. Some KRK locality animals come close but not all te way.

Indeed a very nice location variant, like Jan wrote the Krk ones are colose to this, sometimes the northern most locations are similar: south Tyrol , or the Carinthia ones too. But you can find them also in Montenegro, where we are known a lot of diff. color morph as well.
But back to your question - no, I don´t know any that worked or breed with this locality.
Maby some of the Members from the ,,Balkan,, can help.

Wow, thanks for sharing this link. This is a really nice coloration of ammodytes and very interesting to see. Would be interesting too, if someone here is breeding this locality.

Hello George,

you are right, these V. ammod. are stunning. And their biology there is very intersting.

I have been looking for reptiles in that area quite often and I have seen a good number of V. ammod. there but never took any with me. They can be found at up to 1300m. altitude. At that elevation their annual period of activity is so short that females don´t give birth to their young in the year when they have mated. I have been there in mid-May with still (old) winter snow covering the whole area and in mid-September with new snow again.

The photos Berislav posted show mainly outstanding specimens. Most of the V. ammodytes there are light to medium-grey with medium to dark-grey pattern, females having a brownish-grey color as you can see on some of the photos there. But I also found some males there that were white with only the borders of the pattern as a black line, the rest of the pattern white.

Adult V. ammod. from that area are much longer than those from Krk-island.

Best regards,
Rainer

Hello George,

I have very few photos of V. ammod. from that area. All show females that look like those posted by Berislav Horvatic, whom I really appreciate. Most of them pale-grey with pale, sometimes almost faded pattern, some grey with a bit of brown.
I was there long ago when digital-cameras weren´t available yet. My camera equipment was a Nikon with several lenses,..., altogether several kilograms. With all the other equipment that was necessary for my work there it would have been too much and risky for the camera to carry with me for hours in really rough terrain. So I only took a few photos (slides) close to the places where we left our car.

Best regards,
Rainer

I was speaking with Berislav in may (during our herp trip in Croatia) on these ammodytes from Krasno. This nice color is very rare.

Hello Pierre-Yves,

that is true for the area near Krasno, as I also wrote in my first post ("outstanding specimens"). The further you go up in the Velebit, the less brown specimens you will find within a population and the more are light grey or even white (only males) with black and sometimes partly faded pattern.

The photos posted by Nicola Rahme from 850m. posted on Balcanica.info show more normal individuals for that altitude in that area.

Best regards,
Rainer
