Dear Venomland Members and Friends, Venomland is a little more than 6 years old now and by far the biggest Hot Snake community on the Planet! We want to thank all of you who made Venomland the leading Board. We are also very thankful to our Moderators and Admins for years of hard work. Now, it is time to move on. I have been thinking how to proceed and what to do with our beloved board as we reach a size, that we need to make drastic changes to secure the future of our community. As of now, Venomland is hosted by a free (well mostly free) hosting service. That was good for the first years but now we need to find a new way to run our forum. I have spend hundreds of Dollars over the years to keep Venomland up and running, and i have done so with pleasure. Now, we need your help! We need to come up with several thousand dollars for our Venomland 2.0 project, which i frankly cant pay for any longer by myself. So Venomland is asking his Friends and Members for the first time for their financial Support. Please help to keep Venomland alive, and let us move on to a new, better Portal in the Future! Every Dollar is helping us a great deal. I know, its hard times for everyone, but please spare a few Dollar for our community. If you have only 10 Dollars to spare, we are grateful, if it is more, it would be awesome. We are planning to develop a very new Venomland, with real community functions, a forum like you are already loving it and a real (online) Hot Snake Magazin. Also, there will be download areas for scientific papers, Wallpapers and more. Again folks, we can only do that if you all help. Please send me a Private Message if you want to keep Venomland alive, i will provide you with the details on how to donate Money. For now, we can accept money from creditcards via skrill (please google it, its a free service - account-details will be forwarded to you) and paypal. All the best, and for a (hopefully) nice future of our Board. Mario

Wauw,
I own a nummifer.
But I never thought the colors were so divers.

Are the grey ones male, and the others female?
Or is that not the case?

Great picture tho.
What was the number?

Thanks for sharing.

Actually the female that gave birth was reddish color- I am not sure, however, if coloration depends upon sex in this species. The litter was 22 !

Michael

The largest litter is somewhere around 38. The female that had these was about 50 cm TL +/-. Here's a pic of an orange, blonde, and brown juvenile several months later.

That are large litters.
You got to love them, such easy animals to keep.
I prefer the dark animals, more contrast. Beautifull.
How long do the mexicanus get compairing to the nummifers?
Anywone?

Greetings,
Arjan.

Unfortunately I did not retain any of the juveniles. I originally kept 3 but thinned down my collection and parted with them. 19 out of the 22 babies went to a friend (artist Bill Montgomery) who loaned the  brown male that mated with my reddish colored Honduran female. By the way, Bill is a talented illustrator and his works appear on a number of reptile books including "Biology of the Pitvipers" and "Biology of the Vipers".

It is my impression that these multicolored litters are fairly common in this species, or at least the ones I have had contact with. I seem to remember that another friend (Grant Ankenman) from Toronto, Ontario had similar results with his litters (reds, blondes, and browns).

Hi Michael.

And do you have pics of the parents?, I am interesting in the change of color with the time.. The color red is in adult same? or is more black?

Thanks for your time.

Okay, here is another pic of the original 22 young that were born to a red Honduran female (which I unfortunately don't have a pic of ) and a brown male:

" />

This is an image taken yesterday of one of the 'red' juveniles at 5-6 years of age. This pic was taken with the aid of a flash which washed out much of the red coloration which this snake still has on it's lower sides:

" />

This is the dark brown male which sired the litter of 22:

" />

As you can see, the juvenile lost much of it's brighter coloration as it has matured. Males may also darken w/age. I wish I had a photo of the female that gave birth (deceased) as she was very orange-red in coloration.

Michael:

Wow, very nice pics, the final color is very nice. And It´is interesting that variation in color of the babies..
In my opinion, is an excellent pitviper for collection. "mini bushmaster"
Thanks for sharing.

A close up pic of one of the "red" juveniles after 5-6 years:

" />

And one of the "blonde" juveniles after 5-6 years:

" />

Very much bushmaster-like in appearance. Notice the difference in the coloration of the lateral surfaces and eyes between the "red" and "blonde" specimens. This species is really a spectacular species that is often taken for granted by venomous snake keepers.
