Dear Venomland Members and Friends, Venomland is a little more than 6 years old now and by far the biggest Hot Snake community on the Planet! We want to thank all of you who made Venomland the leading Board. We are also very thankful to our Moderators and Admins for years of hard work. Now, it is time to move on. I have been thinking how to proceed and what to do with our beloved board as we reach a size, that we need to make drastic changes to secure the future of our community. As of now, Venomland is hosted by a free (well mostly free) hosting service. That was good for the first years but now we need to find a new way to run our forum. I have spend hundreds of Dollars over the years to keep Venomland up and running, and i have done so with pleasure. Now, we need your help! We need to come up with several thousand dollars for our Venomland 2.0 project, which i frankly cant pay for any longer by myself. So Venomland is asking his Friends and Members for the first time for their financial Support. Please help to keep Venomland alive, and let us move on to a new, better Portal in the Future! Every Dollar is helping us a great deal. I know, its hard times for everyone, but please spare a few Dollar for our community. If you have only 10 Dollars to spare, we are grateful, if it is more, it would be awesome. We are planning to develop a very new Venomland, with real community functions, a forum like you are already loving it and a real (online) Hot Snake Magazin. Also, there will be download areas for scientific papers, Wallpapers and more. Again folks, we can only do that if you all help. Please send me a Private Message if you want to keep Venomland alive, i will provide you with the details on how to donate Money. For now, we can accept money from creditcards via skrill (please google it, its a free service - account-details will be forwarded to you) and paypal. All the best, and for a (hopefully) nice future of our Board. Mario

I never saw them in person. But as I heard/red they are "dwarfish" form of Vipera ammodytes ammodytes subspecies and therefore long approx 40-50cm. They are very beautiful coloured too. At this link you can find some pictures: http://outdoors.webshots.com/album/275600167gPIinC?start=24

I have caught a V. ammodytes on the Island of Ada. That one was the same size as any other V. ammodytes I have encountered in the nature. It was more red then the species in general are.

Hi Anze,
yes I know some people that breed them actually and has breed them in the past and the future. Actualy you can find a CB couple in a german forum. I send you the link on PM.
I was on Ada some years ago, I think, the looks not very differend to the other ammodytes from the ,, mainland´´around there. Some are smaler, but you can find also bigger one there. Also you can find smal ammodytes on the main land.... In this area the ammodytes are very polymorph in coloration. Not only from Ada! One fact is very intressting: Some of them lay in trees! Ok, you can find other european Vipers also in smal trees, but on Ada it is very often seen! Big areas of this ,,Island´´ are swamps, and the ammodytes lay on the trees over the water. This Island don´t looks like a ,,typical´´ ammodytes Habitat.
You will see, also the lizzards in the same position! So, you can imagine wy the doing that...

Hello Anze,

Ada Bojana is one of the places that I have been visiting each year during my trips to Montenegro for almost 40 years now.
The island is made of sand washed there by the River Bojana that flows there from Lake Skutari, isolated from the mainland only by two branches of the River Bojana. The habitat is very untypical for V. ammodytes, especially from V. amm. habitat where you live. Swamp in parts of the island, riparian forest in most parts.
The average size of V. amm. is even smaller than in populations on the mainland and there average size is relatively small in comparison to most northern V. amm. I rarely found adult V. amm. on Ada that were over 50cm. long. They can have almost any color there that is possible in V. amm., many animals are yellowish or reddish. If you look through my posts in this forum you can find some photos of Ada-Ammod (Scutari-Ammodytes-thread by Mario Lutz, May 2008).
On that island V.ammod. can often be found very close to water and when disturbed escape into the water like Natrix and sometimes even dive away. You can even find them in dense forest with hardly any sunny spots.
Food consists mainly of Podarcis-lizards, small mammals and birds but I have also seen them eat frogs, snakes (a small Z. longissimus and a small Dolichophis caspius) and Anguis fragilis there.
That is an interesting habitat but if you are used to “normal” V. amm. habitat like in your place you must get accustomed to it though the population of V. amm. is quite dense.
Like Peter writes you can often find them on bushes and small trees (mainly if it is very warm) but usually they are on the ground like other V. amm.

Hello Mique,

Be careful with those tongues and other tools that might be used for catching snakes. Don´t let yourself get caught with them. Reptiles, and for a few years now V. ammod. too, are protected by law in Montenegro. And if you come across the (for you) wrong policeman or ranger you might get problems.

Best wishes,
Rainer
